Increasing the capacities of the Local Government Units, in Albania’s EU Integration Process.
“Municipalities for Europe” Initiative supports local governments in understanding and embracing their role in the EU integration process, fostering alignment with European standards at the local level. It has contributed to strengthening local governance and fostering closer connections between Albanian municipalities and the European Union. By enhancing institutional capacities, promoting effective communication, and organizing visibility initiatives, the project empowered local administrations to better engage with EU policies and programs. The sustained operation of the 61 EU Units ensures a lasting impact, helping Albanian municipalities align with European integration efforts and better serve their communities.
The project activities were organized around three key components:
- Institutional Building and Training
- Networking and Online Communication
- Visibility and Events
Through these components, the project provided technical assistance to establish and operationalize 61 EU Units (referred to as “EU Corners”) within municipalities. These units play a critical role in coordinating EU-related processes internally and organizing community outreach initiatives.
Beneficiaries of this projects are:
- Municipalities and autonomous institutions
- Citizens, civil society organizations, and ministries (especially the Ministry of Interior)
- Private sector, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
